I am an emeritus professor of politics at the Australian National University. After spending much of my academic life working as a sociologist in Britain and Australia, I spent twenty years or so in political science at ANU before retiring following a stroke in 2007. As often happens to senior academics I now find myself out of sympathy with the direction  in which my old department developed after I left. (I have never been able to take seriously the intellectual pretensions associated with the  second part of the label ‘political science’)

I started this blog, talking politics, as a place to air views about politics and especially, about the terms in which it is conducted. Several of my entries are essentially works in progress
